About Good News Art Studio
Meet the owner and artist of Good News Art Studio, Madison Lawson, and learn what we're all about!
Hi, my name is Madison Lawson! I always find it tricky on platforms like this, deciding whether to write about myself in the first or third person... but I am choosing now to be as personal as possible with you. Because that's what I want the entire time we work together in the tattooing process to be like. I am just a simple person who is blessed to make art every day and meet amazing people who are kind enough to collect my art!
I've been tattooing for thirteen years now, and it's been such a beautiful adventure. My tattoo apprenticeship came quickly after dropping out of Southern Utah University's Art Program to pursue becoming a tattoo artist. One of my favorite university professors found out that I wanted to become a tattooer, and questioned me, "Do you need a college degree for that?" I replied, "Well, no". And he looked at me, shrugged his shoulders, and exclaimed, "Then what are you doing here? Go!" So, we can all thank Mr. Cuthbertson for helping me to quit dragging my feet and just do the tootin' thing.
I had a goal to get my tattoo apprenticeship before my 21st birthday, and by the skin of my teeth, Mitch Anderson, who is an amazing black and grey realism artist, took me under his wing the NIGHT before I would be twenty-one. He introduced me to my extra mentor, Buck Harvey, years after I had already been tattooing professionally, and to both of these men, I am forever grateful for their generosity of sharing their knowledge and talent with me, and will always consider them good friends.
Through these thirteen years, I've worked at EIGHT tattoo shops. EIGHT!!! Some of those experiences were amazing, some... just necessary. Necessary to learn what kinds of things I wanted to change when I would eventually open up my own tattoo shop. So that is where we are now, shop number NINE, that happens to be MINE! I am so blessed!
I want Good News Art Studio to be a place where clients know they will be safe, loved, and valued. Cleanliness, good communication, and a bright and happy atmosphere are things I strive to provide for my clients. My studio is small and private, I just take one appointment at a time. This gives my clients complete privacy without that dread of strangers coming by to interfere, and just enjoying time to be still and get some beautiful art. It's such an honor to get to collaborate with people, and getting tattooed, I believe, requires so much vulnerability. I treasure getting to share and protect that with my clients, and the occasion should be one to celebrate!
So now, here I am in Greensboro, NC living my best life with my amazing husband Cam, painting and tattooing, hiking with our sweet dog Molly. My husband and pup inspire my art, the love they give me and that I feel for them. The beautiful greenery of North Carolina, my current home, and the memories of the Utah desert from which I came, all seep into my work. I've always been influenced by nature, and it influences me even more now that I have given my life to Jesus and see His hand of creation in absolutely everything. Artists such as Degas and other impressionists who could catch a feeling in their work through a beautiful haze influenced me as well as my very favorite creative, Alphonse Mucha, father of art nouveau. Happy, whimsical, bright, beautiful, good, nature inspired, female faces, etc. would best describe some of the things I like to create.
I would be honored to work with you on tattoos or commissioned paintings! I can't wait to get to know you and thank you to all of those I already know and show me so much love and support. Hoping we get to share all sorts of Good News with each other.
With Love,
Madison Lawson
